Important Information for Active Employees Eligible for Medicare

If you are an active state employee eligible for Medicare, your state group insurance plan is your primary insurance coverage. Medicare will pay as secondary. Most people are eligible for premium-free Medicare Part A (hospital insurance). Medicare Part B (medical insurance) requires you to pay a monthly premium.

Because you are an active employee and the State Group Insurance Plan (the Plan) is the primary payer, you can choose to delay your Medicare Part B coverage. You qualify for a special enrollment period with Medicare, which means you can choose to delay enrollment in Medicare Part B without penalty. After you stop working, you have eight months to enroll in Medicare Part B without penalty. To delay enrollment in Medicare Part B, contact Medicare at www.medicare.gov or (800) MEDICARE (800) 633-4227. TTY users call (877) 486-2048.

Please note: If you do not already have it, you should elect Medicare Part B as soon as you retire. As a retiree, once you are eligible for Medicare Parts A and B, the Plan pays secondary. Medicare will become the primary payer for you health care services. As a retiree, if you do not elect your Medicare Part B coverage, you will have to pay the first 80 percent of your health care expenses, and the Plan will pay secondary.

Once you become eligible for Medicare, please send a copy of your Medicare card to People First (include your People First ID number) to:
