McGuire's to Keep Signs and Add Safegaurds
April 25, 2007
This morning in a joint press conference Secretary Holly Benson and the Martin family, the owners of the McGuire’s Irish Pubs in Pensacola and Destin, announced that McGuire’s famous bathroom signs would be allowed to remain but additional safeguards will be put in place.
“My family has enjoyed McGuire’s for years and has even enjoyed sending unassuming visitors to the bathrooms,” Secretary Benson said. “But when we received complaints about the signage, our department had to make sure that we were upholding the law and protecting the public.”
“We recognized the potential for embarrassment, and we wanted to take additional steps,” said Jim Martin. “So now we will be adding interior swinging doors and additional signage to ensure that those who may be confused will not take the joke too far. And we would like to thank the community for their support over the past thirty years.”
“We believe this step will bring them into compliance with the statutes governing restaurants. Meanwhile, our department is glad to be part of preserving this tradition,” Benson concluded. “Even bureaucrats have a sense of humor.”
