BSO Conducts Operation Targeting Unlicensed Contractors
June 17, 2008
If you’re an unlicensed contractor doing business in Broward County, the Broward Sheriff’s Office is looking for you. Today, BSO in partnership with the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) and Broward County Code Services (BCCS), conducted a sting operation targeting unlicensed contractors.
The operation occurred in a vacant lot at 1657 W. Oakland Park Blvd., Oakland Park. BSO Economic Crimes detectives and deputies randomly checked vehicles operating in a commercial capacity as contractors. Detectives, along with investigators from DBPR and BCCS, conducted records checks for the existence and validity of required contractor’s licenses as well as insurance requirements. Individuals were identified and checked for violations and warrants.
“We have no tolerance in Broward County for unlicensed contractors,” Sheriff Al Lamberti said. “Homeowners need to do their homework then they hire a contractor and law enforcement agencies need to go after these fly-by-night operators.”
The operation netted numerous violations. BSO issued 20 notices to appear (NTAs) and seven traffic citations. Representatives from DBPR and BCCS issued 38 citations. DBPR issued two cease and desist orders. BSO made one arrest for possession of marijuana.
“By partnering with the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, and other local law enforcement agencies, we can ensure compliance with state and local contractor requirements at the same time,” said Department of Business and Professional Regulation’s Interim Secretary Chuck Drago. “I’d like to thank Sheriff Al Lamberti for partnering with DBPR to help stop unlicensed contractor activity and protect Floridians.”
The operation was conducted because of increased citizen complaints about unlicensed contractors and unscrupulous activity of licensed contractors received by BSO, DBPR and BCCS. Because we are in hurricane season, the timing of the operation was also an important factor.
The public is reminded that before signing an agreement with any contractor, consumers should carefully review the agreement and verify a contractor’s license and track record. For more information, contact BSO’s Economic Crime Unit at 954-321-4255.
