Requirements for

Certificates of Competency and

Certified Elevator Technicians

A Certificate of Competency is a credential that certifies the holder has received the training necessary to perform the duties of a Certified Elevator Technician. You must hold a Certificate of Competency, issued by the bureau, before you can register as a Certified Elevator Technician. Only Certified Elevator Technicians are properly licensed and registered to construct, install, inspect, maintain or repair vertical conveyances in the State of Florida.

1. Proof of General Liability Insurance

Obtain general liability insurance in a minimum amount of $100,000 per person and $300,000 per occurrence. All elevator companies, elevator inspectors, and independent elevator technicians must have insurance as described above. Proof of insurance must be provided to the bureau with the application.

2. Professional Experience

Proof of four years experience constructing, maintaining, servicing, or repairing elevators or other conveyances regulated by the bureau.

3. Education

Proof of completion of one of the following:

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering
• Passage of the Certificate of Competency test. This test is administered by Prometric.
• Apprenticeship in elevator mechanics approved by the United States Department of Labor.
• Endorsement from NEIEP or NAEC.
• Previous license from another jurisdiction in the United States.

4. Application

Obtain and complete the appropriate application form.

5. Fee

Certificate of Competency applicants only: A $50 license fee is required with the application.
