8 A.M. - 8 P.M., Friday - Sunday

The Parks and Recreation Department, under the Director's supervision, organizes and operates all the
recreation facilities within the city. There are two active facilities: the recreation center consists of (5) tennis courts, 
(4) four-wall racquetball courts and (12) shuffleboard courts, all lighted. The facility is open 364 days a year, weather
permitting. In addition to open play on the courts, tournaments and organized leagues are available to the participants. 
The recreation center building houses the administrative offices as well as a meeting and assembly room where a wide|
variety of children and adult special interest classes are held. This department provides support services to local athletic 
groups, community service organizations and the recreation advisory board.

MAY ACTIVITIES 2008

CAPE CANAVERAL RECREATION CENTER

SENIOR LITE & FIT AEROBICS - An easy does aerobics with a warm up and cool down featuring a chair based workout intended to tone the upper and lower body.  Bring a set of light weights, water and a towel.  Class meets Wednesdays at 11:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m.
Polly Helm, Instructor - $5 per class

AIKIDO A non-aggressive martial art based on the principle of non-resistance. Does not require
 physical strength to be effective.  Meets twice  a week –Tuesdays 6-7 p.m.  & Fridays 6-7:30p.m.
Monthly fee, $35 residents/$38 others.

BALLROOM DANCE A variety of Swing Time dance will be taught through the month of May on 
Mondays from
 7-8:30 p.m., which includes a half hour of practice following the instruction.  Fee is $60.  
Laura Beers is the instructor. Come alone or bring a partner. 

BRIDGE (Duplicate) - is held every Tuesday and Friday at 12:30 p.m.  Pay at the door, $4.00.  
Nancy Perry is the director on Tuesday, Phyllis Hall on Friday.

DRAWING The class will begin with structured instruction on light and shadow, subject placement, perspective, 3D to 2D translation, use of drawing tools, and content.  Meets Monday at 1:30 p.m.
Cost is $7 per class.  Instructor - Jerry Munday.

FAMILY KARATE -  Classes are held from 4-5 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays & Thursdays. 
Monthly fee is $45 residents/$48 non-residents   A $75 sign up fee includes the 1st month of instruction, 
a uniform, training DVD, student notebook and access to online training.

KICKBOXING - Based on Hard style Chinese Kenpo Boxing; this class will cover balance, stance, jump kicks, spin kicks, as well as proper punching techniques.  
Mondays and Wednesdays at 5:15 - 6:15 p.m.
$5 per class - Jerry Munday, Instructor.

LITTLE DRAGONS – Karate for 4-6 year olds.  Class meets from 3:15-3:45 on Mondays, Wednesdays & Thursdays.  See Family Karate for information on instructor and class fees - same fees apply.

LINE DANCING – Classes are held on Mondays from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. 
The $6 per class fee includes instruction as well as dancing; all types & styles of music and dances are used. 
Sylvia Schell is the instructor. [No class on 5/19.]
New students are always welcome.

Tennis Lessons - Lessons are FREE to all kids' 8 - 14. 
Lessons are held Tuesdays from 3:30 - 5:00.  Equipment is supplied.  
Instructors - Bobbi Carrigan and "H" McGraw.

WOMEN'S SELF DEFENSE - This course is based on Kenpo Karate; it is designed to be simple and 
effective concentrating on pressure point and flexor point techniques that can subdue even the largest attacker.
Class meets on Wednesdays at 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.
$7 per class. Instructor Jerry Munday.

YOGA (Hatha Style) - Stretching, muscle toning and disciplined breathing exercises.  
Meets on Thursdays from 5:45-7 p.m.  
Jan Seals is the instructor.  
Pay by the class $8, you may join anytime.


Youth Center

7920 ORANGE AVENUE – next to the basketball courts & ball fields at Canaveral City Park.
Monday – Friday:  3:00 – 6:00 PM
Saturday:  12:00 – 5:00 PM

AGES 10 – 15

This is a drop-in center; youths may come and go as they choose.  
Acceptable behavior is required. 
There is adult supervision on the premises during the hours of operation. 

Center has a pool table, ping-pong, foosball, air hockey, board games, checkers, chess, etc. 
There is no charge to attend, snacks & sodas are available at 50 cents each. 
A permission form must be filled out and signed by a parent prior to the youth being admitted.

amongst the native oaks in this beautifully landscaped park.

Manatee Sanctuary Park

The park sits along the banks of the Banana River . There is a 380’ linear boardwalk, restrooms and a 1900 sq ft picnic pavilion with a warming kitchen. There is also a 6’ wide pedway and ample parking.  The park also has 4 horseshoe pits.  The Park is available to rent for special occasions.  Contact 868-1226 for information.

Located at 7920 Orange Avenue, has (2) lighted ball fields, a well equipped children's playground with a 20' x 20' pavilion and a lighted basketball court. Also on this site is a youth center which is open after school and during school vacations to give the youth in the community an opportunity to participate in supervised activities.

shaded passive park with beautiful landscaping and natural vegetation close to City Hall, the Library and the Cape Canaveral Recreation Complex.

 adjacent to the library at 201 Polk Avenue. Veterans' Memorial is a passive park with picnic tables, benches and shady oaks.

Cherie Down 1a.jpg (33175 bytes)Cherie Down Park is located on Ridgewood Avenue behind Cape View Elementary School. Preserving sand dunes and sea grasses, this scenic 6.99-acre community beach park in a neighborhood setting invites beach activities and surf fishing. 
Cherie Down Park is County operated and has restrooms, a small pavilion, a dune crossover, and two sheltered picnic areas at either end of a 320' boardwalk along the dunes. Park closes at dusk.
