The City of Cape Canaveral
(City) was awarded a Sea Turtle Grant from the Caribbean Conservation
Corporation (CCC) in May 2006. The grant was in the amount of $8,920 and was
dedicated to reduce artificial light pollution along the City's beach areas
as much as practicable by utilizing the best pollution-reduction technologies
available. The grant funds were provided from the CCC through Florida's
Sea Turtle License Plate Program. Information concerning this
program may be obtained on the listed web page, the attached information
flyer, or by contacting the CCC at (352) 373-6441.
The City's Public Works Director and Code Enforcement Officer, in
cooperation with (1) Brevard County Natural Resources Management Office staff
and (2) marine turtle lighting compliance surveyors funded through a National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) grant, conducted a comprehensive
lighting inspection and noted both public and private lights that were not in
compliance with the City's lighting ordinance. Sixty-five (65) public
streetlights within the City limits were identified that required corrective
lighting action.
The City utilized the grant funds to contract with Florida Power &
Light (FPL) to correct the light pollution by installing lighting cutoff
lenses and shields on the identified power poles. FPL recently completed the
project work resulting in the following accomplishments:
The City will conduct annual inspections of streetlights on beachside
streets to ensure that negative effects of artificial lighting are further
reduced in the future. If you have any questions concerning this lighting
project funded through Florida's Sea Turtle
License Plate Program, please contact Walter Bandish, the acting City's
Public Works Director (868-1240), or Duree Alexander, the City's Code
Enforcement Officer (868-1222).
